Which one do you prefer and why ? I hate that Zetaboards doesn't even offer URL as a sub domain for your forum.

Have you seen the URL stucture you get with a ZetaBoard.

    It's gobbledegook.

It seems Zetaboards url cannot to be shared on FB. It is marked as spam.

No idea about that, but see they use this in the URL.

At least with ProBoard you can use a few URL stuctures to suit. Such as .boards.net

Having something like this to look pretty OK: autodiscussion.boards.net

Freeforums are never recommended for serious forum admins, but if you have to pick one, Id say Zetaboards or Forumotion are not so bad choices. Stay away from Proboards and as far away as possible, unless you are just using that forum for practice purposes.

Forumotion? Using what, phpBB3, Plunto (whatever that is), or an old version of IPB. LOL

I just found a great site hosted with them, a WAREZ one. Looks like they are desperate to me, that they'll allow anything. :biglaugh:

Hall of Famer, I have discussed this with you before in other topics upon this issue.
There are many big boards with free forums, you know this, and we've shown this to you.

The fact it's a free forum has nothing to do with success, and owning a board has never been proven to have anything to do with success either

    Please stop spreading misinformation.
if you'd like to be a part of this conversation, find that productivity I'm asking you for.
Please don't let this topic go the way of other topix you are posting misinformation upon, or I'll have to leave my bbq again and fix stuff. :lildevil:
Not many of us who actually have successful forums agree with any of your opinions on this issue and your posts are beginning to acquire small touch of manic hate mongering in them.

This topic is a defined discussion re one kind of free software verus the other.

    Have nice day

What do you mean by misinformation? I did not provide any, I said it was not recommended and people should stay away with it, just things you typically find from software review websites. Nothing rude or insulting, just plain facts or opinions. I did not say it was crap or it sucks, and in fact I did not even provide reasons why people should stay away from Proboards since I believe these are quite obvious. You take words outta my mouth so quickly, just because of the 'serious admin' term I used? If you are worried about my past history against Proboards, theres no need for that since I will not use any inappropriate words or argue with proboards supporters. Well, thats of course thats if we share the same agreements on what are appropriate or inappropriate. Sounds like you are trying to pick a fight with me but honestly, I dont really care.

    Neither.
Unless you are offered a way to migrate to serious selfhosting when you need it, better not start a forum altogether.

Your Taz history of posts shows trending with your agressive stance against free forums, as with all your other posts on this topic in this section of Taz.

Quoting where you're getting your information from will certainly help your case and perhaps help us understand why you keep repeating that you are against free forums. Right now you read like you're quoting your own opinion as a kind of accepted fact with no references to your claims.

I will agree that a paid for forum can help with ego and confidence, but will have minimal to no effect on whether a forum is actually successful or not.

That part comes from the person who creates the forum. There's just no escaping hard work.

Special effects, special skins and a paid-for url will never hide a lack of motivation or talent.

Since earlier this year I've been thinking of starting a forum on ProBoards, customizing the looks to a point where it doesn't even look like a ProBoards forum anymore and then getting it active.

The reason? I just to prove once and for all that ProBoards and other free forum hosts are a valid option for certain projects, and the decision to use one isn't necessarily a reflection of one's seriousness or dedication as a forum admin.

Stop trying to censor people because you don't agree with them. How did you become Staff here?

This comment right here is backed by no proof and is condescending in nature. Get over yourself as well.

It would be a shame to create a successful forum on Proboard and then have someone offer you $50,000 for it only for you to be legally unable to sell it. If you don't think people buy free board forums then think again. I know of a few freeboard forums that have sold for $xx,xxx and were converted off to other forum software.

Proboards limits the forum admin from maximizing the end result of their forum when it comes to profit. If you think you would never care about that, then I guess that works for you. I don't like limiting my options though.

So are you saying ProBoards can sell any of their members Big Board right from under their feet with no say in the matter at all? One day they just wake up and their forum is gone, sold to somebody.

I'm going to link to your post on ProBoards and see if they have a comment about that.

No, my comment was how the creator of the forum is completely helpless to profit off their hard work should they want to sell it. There is a market place for selling forums built off free forums and they have sold for quite the chunk of change.

One question I do have though, is what happens when Proboards sells their entire company? We can't expect them to turn down a generous offer from Vertical Scope can we? Crowdgather? Crowdgather has actually bought a free forum platform before.

To be honest, I think Proboards being sold could be a good thing. Might stop their 'anti conversion' crusade and get them to give more rights to forum owners. And hey, if another admin forum I know of is any indication, Crowdgather don't really pay too much attention to their network. So even if they didn't let you convert officially, they probably wouldn't notice if you did anyway.

That's hypothetical, you don't know what's going to happen. And that's like saying -what if the Earth crashed into the Sun tomorrow, or you get run over by a Bus tonight and killed. Bang goes your forum. Nobody knows whats around the corner, even for those paying to run a forum they have full control off.

It was a question, not a statement of fact. These companies sell out all the time so it is a valid concern.

But even if they sold out to another company, that doesn't necessarily mean your forum won't still be their. It just wouldn't be under ProBoards anymore. I've worked for a company that got bought out by another bigger one, still had my same job next day.

But my point before is still valid, how do you know you might not suffer a heart attack and die. What use are your forums to you then, because it can happen just the same way as you saying other things can happen. But anyway.. it's getting a bit OTT.

I see your point, just that you talk as though if another company buys them out bang goes your forum. But that isn't necessarily the case, could happen of course.
