    Hello,

Yesterday, searching for a file in my computer, I found addons that I've code for vB3, that honestly I've forgot even their names. eg microBUSINESS. Have to install it to remember what this mod was for.

Later on, I started wondering if vB3 admins, still need addons. I know that vB3 still has a good amount of installations but, I think so, they're old installations and don't need more changes.

So, what's your opinion. Do you need more (new) addons? Saying new I mean addons that I coded for vB4 and never released them for vB3. Maybe because there are others well established addons. eg Why to release my Reviews for vB4 while there is a very good reviews mod from ThevBGeek?

In addition to your comments, could you please also vote in the poll?

    Thank you
    Chris
PS: I've post the same at vb.org earlier this morning but I thought that is a good idea to repost it at TAZ.

I think the golden days of modifying any forum software is over. These days I try to reduce the mods I'm using and would do best I could to avoid major mods as much as possible. That's just me.

I support your opinion Joe, but this is mostly valid if you're operating a simple forum (let's say a technical forum). I'm in the progress of operating a website on xenforo and I had in mind to use only xF and maybe Resources manager, plus a theme. In just 2 weeks I've spent almost $300 and still I'm missing many things o_O

    XF is an exception.
Seems it is and will be relying on modifications heavily.

For some, maybe, for vB, maybe. But I see many requests posted on XF for custom one off addons, and most of them get filled be one of the many devs.

The xenforo addon community is thriving. There are never enough developers to fill the paid addon requests. Please send over 20 vb developers to produce small and large XF addons. lol.
vb addon community is not very lively anymore because everyone is using ancient vb3/4 and a lot already exists.

There is really not to many left, they all bailed quite some time ago. Some went to XF, some went elsewhere, some gave it up.

I just think with all the apps out there (for phones and tablets) you have a hard time pretending a forum is anything other than a forum. 10 years ago you could use vBulletin as a dating script or a download center, or whatever else. Now, even the best XF coder can't turn XF into a dating script that can compete with Tinder. I ask, why would someone even attempt to try at this point. I do see lots of requests out there, even in the vb.org request for paid services forum, there are more requests than people willing to take them and I'm sure XF has far more requests these days.

It's on my plans to start coding for xF but starting from version 2. Has no sense to code now for v1 and after a couple of months to have to recode them.

What you said there happened. But many of the original coders that left vB at first going to XF, a lot of them have ended up calling it quits since. That said though, some new coders have come along because there doesn't seem to be any shortage of coders on XF reading the XF2 demo board. At minute it feels like a forum for just coders and devs talking on.

Yeah, there is no comparison really when it comes to apps you can install on mobile devices now. But guess that is where the money is made by good coders nowadays, them coding apps for mobile devices up for sale. It doesn't surprise me that coders are slowly leaving forum software, the web has changed and moved on today - forums are a dying breed.

And "freemium" apps at that, the worst kind.

If you're talking fot xF, I've to add "......and premium apps costing almost like a new xF license". $99 for a Subscriptions addon.

I think he means the multitude of free apps you can use with mobile devices but then they tend to alert you to buy the premium version to unlock more features. You get that a lot with games for mobile apps my daughters kids play on their pads. But many doing it that way means there are 1000's upon 1000's of apps you can 'use for free' without you needing to pay anything unless wanting the premium version later

It's not even free version trying to but a premium version (with more features and/or less ads.) That is a good model. You had it at the "free" to download apps but then anything you do you need to buy something. A dollar here, 5 dollars there... it adds up. I never buy/use such apps but I can see you end up paying $50 or more for a game that may have cost $3 to $5 a few years ago.

My own mother plays a slot machine game on Facebook. They are just useless credits. You can't buy anything with them or do anything with them but use them in the game. But they only give you so many a day. Once you run out you have to buy more for like $10. She knows it's wasted money but she has still done it from time to time because she enjoys the game.

5 years ago, even 25 years ago, you could just buy a casino program, install it, and have all the fake credits you want and never have to pay again for $10. Granted it doesn't have the fancy graphics and sound effects as the Facebook game, but no reason it couldn't these days, just no one wastes time making a one time fee game anymore when they can make so much more selling credits.
