I restarted Footie Fanatics 2 days ago. It normally has about 2 or 3 members online, and about 4 or 5 guests.

Just a second ago, I looked, and there's 240+ users online.

I'm guessing they aren't proper users?

Spiders from search engines, most likely. Content needs to be discovered to be listed among search engine results.

Yes, it's a good thing, it's browsing your forum so it can be added to the listings, so if you search Footy Fanatics, it should appear on the results.

Also, if you "tweeted" on Twitter and or Facebook post about your forum, Google and other bots instantly go to your website and this could be the reason for it.

Check your session time as well. This can impact your online user display

I agree with Raymond, a lot of twitter activity can send lots of bots to your site.

Why don't you check there ip's and host to see where they come from/belong. That will give you a better idea.
