We all know that VBulletin has been THE most widely used board for serious websites for a LONG time. It had the most support and the mod development was great.

With the new rise of web 2.0 site design it seems more people are going for AJAX powered boards or IP .Board for some reason.

Why is that? Has anyone noticed the RISE of IP .Board and the slow death of VBulletin?

Because ipb would be better for it.

I'm not really wondering why web2.0 designers prefer IP .Board.
I guess I'm saying SINCE the rise of web2.0; the time period...
    You know what I mean?
I am just wondering why VBulletin is dying and IP .Board is rising period.

vBulletin isn't dying, there are just a lot better and more software to choose from now, MyBB and phpBB3 are close in terms of features now, as a result, not as many people bother paying for vB.

And IPB isn't surpassing vB, it's just gotten more popular over time, as many things do.

vBulletin is also Ajax powered, by the way.

vBulletin is still the most powerful forum software available. My guess is that it also has more users than IPB.

IPB is advancing a lot quicker than vBulletin, but it will take a while to catch up. vBulletin also has a much better modification community than IPB.

Why is it that multi-million dollar companies such as NASA, Yahoo and nVidia use IP .Board? I haven't really seen any such companies using VBulletin?
I use VBulletin and have for 6 years.

Three examples (oddly, the exact same examples Discussions used here) establish essentially nothing. That sample is too tiny (not to mention arbitrary, among other things) to be assumed as representative.

No forum software is AJAX powered, they merely make use of AJAX to accomplish certain things such as quick moderation etc.

vBulletin is still the leader but their slow development pace is killing them. Also a lot of people are really aggravated at how secretive they are with their lack of a roadmap.

I think vBulletin is sticking to the forum principle why IPB is going for a social networking sort of thing, the weird stepchild of a forum and MySpace.

IPB is doing some revolutionary things which is probably why people are going to it, but for a straight forum vB is still king.

The reason why I never have, and never will use vBulletin is the fact that it looks old, it doesn't suit me, and it's old technology. I'm afraid that IPB is now top of the pops, and Invision Power has a lot more going on for it. vBulletin was great in it's time, but it's time has passed.

Heck, I prefer phpBB3 over it.

To each his own. I don't see vBulletin as "looking old" at all and I've never liked the look of IPB. To me, it looks two-dimensional compared to vBulletin and I find the IPB controls awkward and non-intuitive.

No, I see more vBulletin forums these days. IP boards stink.
I've tried IP boards' software and I really didn't like it.

Well I've had both and do prefer IPB over VB...just my personal taste though...that's why there are choices between the wide range of BB software out there...right? Imagine an Internet with all the same forum software...yuck!

In my opinion, IPB is directed towards businesses, which is clearly shown by it's professionalism on their website. While I believe IPB is good software, I much prefer vBulletin for personal forums, and it would work fine as a professional forum, also.

While it may be true that IPB is advancing "faster" than vBulletin, it would take years for them to come out equal in regards to community support and modifications. I've never had a problem finding any modification, and I've always been efficiently helped by another vBulletin owner if a problem arises.

For now, vBulletin is far ahead in community and modifications, and it's still more powerful software. Who knows; over the years, IPB may become better, but for now, I'm sticking with the best, and that's vBulletin.
