My suggestion is:don't waste your time and money.
Your currently underaged users with brain will become 18+ years old new users.
What can you do to prevent this?
Buy an add which detects users using the same IP.
Buy an add to prevent users using proxies.
    Etc.....

Perhaps... Well... Likely yes. I know exactly what you mean... And there are 'alter-ego' type add-ons out there. But I want to do my due diligence in preventing some of the youngsters from accessing the more 'mature' subject matters of my new forum. If ever an issue were to arise - I could say that I did what I could on my end to abide by 'social norms' of restricting adult content to the adults ;)

Wow. That sounds so ... grown-up.

But yeah. I'm thinking of adding a section for posting NSFW content and allow it to be the only section for such postings.
Restricting the content by registration age seems to be the only thing I can do to prevent 'unauthorized' access. Plus - I'll be running Adsense. Using a conditional to not show ads in the adult section will prevent my content from being flagged as inappropriate.

I believe that without using extra conditionals, in all forum software it's prevented when the content is not public.

To an extent handling this depends on why you don't want underage users on your forum.

Hmmmm. Good question Howard. And I've *kinda* spoken with someone about this already. And you're a doctor! Your insight could prove quite helpful. And I assure you - for the most part - nothing untoward and sensational as for pornography. But my forum is geared to a group of people whose concerns often turn towards questioning different reconstructive surgeries. I know some of the Facebook groups I belong to allow the posting of surgery before-after photos. But from my understanding - such discussion does not actually verge on the vulgar - but more towards the medical. Am I correct in this assumption?

My main reasoning for waning the age thing is because I have something similarly constructed for my other forum. And it worked a treat. There were some rather sensationally (vulgar?) descriptive/seductive writing. In fact - Google sent me a notice the other day about a 6-year old post. A member posted a short story that was strewn with vulgarities. Another member had posted a poem making multiple uses of the N-word in an piece analogizing it towards a bird that pecks you even upon its death bed. It was rather silly IMO. But ...

At anyrate yes - Pictures of boob jobs, factual reconstructions along with a slew of other surgery options, as well as videos and such that I'm not even sure will be posted on my forum *could* potentially be a subject matter of interest to my memberbase. I will be allowing younger members to register - so it's just a concern. That, as well as I'm creating a policy that all *NSFW* pictures/discussion should only be allowed in an opt-in type of forum only, which is not readily available to unregistered users. I'm trying to dot my i's and cross my t's as it it were....

    Any thoughts?

You probably also want to note that some of the images may be distressing and to mention exactly what to expect prior to going in. Maybe, with a little page you have to click through before you can actually view the forum.

I'm not sure on the age gate front.

If you really must block underage visitors, the only foolproof method is really to make your forum only browsable by logged users, require birthday input at registration and block existing users from browsing until they input their birthday.
But even if you corroborate their input data with information from their social media you couldnt ve certain its truthful.

A most pragmatic approach imo is a mix of real age and account age (minimum membership duration) before access to limired sections is granted. The latter is meant to counter a few types of restriction bypasses and ensure members necer sign up only for those saucy privacy-sensitive sections. No fancy addons needed, just permission masks.
