Hi guys

this is my first topic on the admin zone

I m from the middle east

i been searching for a host to startup my website to sell books , manuscripts

and handmades stuff

after hours and hours of searching i found out that 1and1 which is in the UK is the best for me

and the other would be TMD .

but the negative reviews about 1and1 from mainly US residents started to make me have doubts

can it be true that they are scammers ?
with more than thousands of wenbsites hosted ?

i m leaving this to you guys

what do you think ?

i m making a domain for the store and a subdomain (forum )

the store will be 3 or 4 categories only

each categorie will have less than 25 item and each item will have 7 images max

small descriptions and thats all

not an e store

but a custumized store may look like the e store but with less links and plugins and with no shopping cart and so on

just the design will be almost the same

i m the only person who will run it . i only do this to attract special clients to buy specific items which means i don`t care about attracting more ppl to the site

my clients would be less than 500

i m making y mind after reading replys for almost a month from now

thank you very much in advance

1&1 are definitely NOT scammers, I used 1&1 in the UK for many years (and still do, for domains). However they are a very large company and this means it can be hard to get good support if something goes wrong, plus their basic packages whilst giving you lots for the money are not that quick. They also have this nasty habit (which I think should be made illegal) of NOT telling you if your package drops in price - leaving you paying the higher price.

But if you want cheap hosting with lots of features and don't worry too much about blazingly quick speeds, it's great as a host to start off with.

It all comes down to what you want to spend. You get what you pay for.

Honestly, 1and1's main issue is most of the features they have are not worth the money. There are plenty of hosts out there which provide you with much better quality hosting for roughly the same price.

I have some domains with them which I am slowly moving away.

Their mechanisms are clunky and awkward (try to cancel a domain and you will see what I mean). Customer service sucks and is in Indianglish.

I think a lot of the negative reviews about 1and1 are commonly misunderstood. I have used their unmanaged VPS for two years now, and I haven't had a single issue.

The real problem is that people don't understand that to operate an unmanaged server, you need to know what you're doing. If you don't, then of course it's not going to work out. It's in your contract that 1&1 will not touch your unmanaged server without your permission unless you violate the ToS. They stay out of my way and it's wonderful.

Now, as for their shared hosting, it's awful. They oversell and it just sucks. But for VPS and dedicated services, I love them.

However, I do agree with Manny that some of their systems are a bit bloated. Cancelling a domain is indeed kind of an involved process.

I use to have 1 and 1 and never had a problem. Just keep in mind that they are going to lock you into a contract.

I would never use them again. Terrible customer service. There are so many other hosts out there that give a good value, and don't treat their customers as terribly as they treated me, why bother risking it?

I'm not locked into a contract...actually that was one of the things I loved about them when I was shopping for hosts.

Dustin, the average joe doesn't care about going the route of unmanaged. While it is beneficial for some who are working on things tedious and require some TLC, it's not going to be for most of the people out there. 1and1's prices are still high even in comparison of some of the other hosts out there, and those other hosts have customer service and practices that far surpass 1and1's.

ahmed, I don't know what exactly it is you're looking for in a host...but if you are going to need a fair share of resources with quality customer service and a decent feature-set - I might recommend KnownHost. They've been incredibly flexible with me and their support is top notch. I think the most I've waited for a reply is about 15 minutes, and have never had an issue with any of the hardware there.

I've heard the claim that their prices are high, but frankly, I've yet to see any evidence to prove it. Since you posted KnownHost (who I have no problem with and have heard great things), I'll quote their pricing.

I pay $29/month with no contract for an unmanaged VPS with nearly the same specifications as KnownHost's VPS-4 package, which they have priced at $60/month. The only two differences between the packages that I can see are the managed service with KnownHost, and the extra 30GB of storage with KnownHost. Because I have a fairly strong knowledge of server administration, I was willing to sacrifice those two things, and save myself $30 per month.

:worship: I had terrible customer service from them in the past as well.

I did get the refund I requested though. So they aren't scammers.

1&1 is not scam, they are really big company with thousands of customers. They are however, better avoided. Most hosting forums are full of horror stories from 1&1, you better go with a specialist host if that is what you are looking for.

Agree with this
MUCH better support out there for only a few dollars more.
