Just the initial costs. Like domain, host, software cost, kind of license etc.

I´m curious because sooner or later I´ll buy a Vbulletin Owned license, and I´m gonna register my domain at ASO (asmallorange.com). They will be my host also.

Apache and MySQL are free software, but you probably spent some extra bucks to upgrade your desktop computer. What modifications did you do? Besides adding more RAM.

I you talking about the costs of hosting your forum on your own computer? Or hosting it properly?

    Preferably both.
I want to have a idea how much I´m gonna spend.

It will be a "serious" forum, which means I hope that someday it will achieve the Big Board status and I´m gonna work hard on it.

Well if you want a serious forum you can forget about hosting it on your pc. Modern pcs should be able to handle quite a bit of load but its your bandwidth that will slow everything down.

At the moment i have around 800 visitors a day with around 6 people online all the time. I use around 1.5gb of bandwidth a day. 1.5 x 30 = 45gb/month needed. But a lot of people are only there to download stuff so it could be less for a regular forum. Im hosted by asmallorange (just moved today). 60gb/month bandwidth + 2gb or so space package for $20/month. On top of that i pay for 3 domain name (in most cases u only need 1) $8 something per year each

So im looking at around $270 per year considering im on free phpbb2 plus software and dont need to pay for VB

    Thanks for the input guys.
Just wondering, how much xx gigas of bandwidth does a large forum use? For me a large forum must have over 1,000 members and/or over 1,000,000 posts.

$10 for .com domain for web boards (goDaddy)
$20 for .ca domain for personal site(network solutions)
$10 / month for three months @ ASO -- until I outgrew that plan --
$20 / month for three months @ ASO
$180 for a lisence of vB.

The $5/month plan at ASO is perfect to start with. You can always upgrade later to a dedicated server ;)

By the way, something that everyone questions about. How much did you earned from your site (adsense, donations, premium members etc.), is it enough to pay the bills at the end of the month?
When did you started to collect that extra money, the "positive revenue"? Was it when you hit the 1k members mark or sometinhg? And what do you do with that extra money, do you spend it on ads or on google in order to get more visitors?

I've earned next to nothing. I've got about $20 in my adsense account, but that won't do anything for a while.

Could you explain how? How many members does your board have? The profit comes from where (most of it)? Premium members, donations or adsense?

    I use 5-6Gb a bandwidth a day. I am on a dedicated server costing around $230 a month. Site has 1,000+ active a day.

I'm new as well. I spent around 200 for everything. I got a custom install from VB bulletin. Nice and easy. I also went with ASO because of the good reviews from the VB community forum. Went down briefly but was up before I could email them. Haven't had a problem since.

When I first started up, here were my expenses:

    vBulletin leased license: $85/year
    Domain name: $6.95/year
    Hosting (Surpass Hosting): $40/year

I quickly outgrew my hosting and had to upgrade, and at that point was up to $60/year.

    Here are my current expenses:
    vBulletin Leased License: $85/year
    Domain Name: $6.95/year
    Hosting (PerfectSQL): $40/month
    SiteUptime Reports: $5/month
    Enhancements such as FlashChat: $30

In my first year, with adsense revenue, donations, and the upcoming release of premium memberships on my site, I think I might just break even this year.

Ouch, that isn´t very cheap, bit I bet the member help you out with donations and such, right?
Just wondering, how many members has your boards?

sully02, why don't you get a owner's license? It´s only $180, you pay a little more, but then you never need to pay it again.

Its a mixture of everything but mainly adsense (90%) I dont think it matters how many members you have as its most likely that google will discount multiple clicks from the same ip. I think i get most clicks from guests anyway. (get around 600 a day) On top of everything you will need to do quite a bit of work maximising your adsense revenue. You cant just stick a banner on the main page and expect every second person to click on it.

    Nice.
My main goal is not to make profit, but I would like to recover the expenses and get some extra money for my pocket, so one day, I might upgrade the forums/host and/or software.

I read somewhere that a guy is a very sucessful admin(?), and his forum gives him more than $4000 a month...not counting with host/domain payments.

If that´s true, that´s pretty impressive.
