It's possible they can remain, depend if they keep on updating like google is doing.

Every social site goes trough same phases during its life:

Phase One: "XYZ is for old grannies and kids, New Portal rules".

New social site is born. If its not useless "hackers" and "pros" migrate to it from existing platforms because "its new and kids/games/commerce is not there". Fresh air attracts more and more and more new users slowly peparing to...

    Phase two: Site goes mainstream

This is where hype is starting. As site gains popularity, it enters mainstream. Eventually everybody is talking about it and "normal people" are slowly moving to it to see "whats that new site they are talking about in TV". Eventually Commerce arrives as well.

    Phase three: Mainstream

This is where FaceBook is now. Pretty much everybody knows it and has account on it. You, your mom, your cat, company you buy toilet paper in has presence on that site.

Phase four: Man, this place really sucks now

As place continues to commercialise itself and profit from its popularity and trieve to keep people active, more and more of users go "this is not what it used to be". This is when story makes a circle.

Keep on mind this analysis is not mine. Its a short summary of far longer article posted one of pl blogs about internet culture.

Anyway yea, eventually Facebook will become "old messy place full of ads, 13yr old's and marketing", and people will slowly move on to new thing. Its only matter of time when it happens.

I really don't see this happening anytime soon. Facebook has a ton of things that keep people coming back. Their applications especially. Sure, Google+ or twitter can catch up to Facebook one day, but really, it'll take a lot of time. When google+ came out, it introduced features that Facebook didn't have yet, and then facebook started updating[the timeline, etc]. As long as they keep updating, the site will be fine.

Updates are double edged sword. Some users will like it while others will go "why you messed that thing up?" and see it as another reason to quit.

I think something bigger will come one day, and Facebook will turn into Myspace.

This is dialectics, after all. Everything that has a beginning will have an end. The question is when.

Facebook has so far been very successful in the industry. Have you heard of the recent news? They bought this and bought that; launched this and launched that.

I am thinking Facebook will stay no. 1 for awhile. The new things that they are coming out with are cool.

Everyone and their dogs are on FB it seems. I never got into Myspace, way too complicated and too many headaches trying to do my page.

Facebook is the most powerful social networking site and in my opinion it may drop its rankings and traffic if there would be another social networking site that give more facilities and enjoyable opportunities to its visitors. As we have seen in the past that more sites that were thought to be the king of their times have lost their traffic and reputation until they made changes them selves.

i can not see any changes in position of Facebook as Social Media Platform for next 3-5 years. Facebook gives good and user friendly features then other Social Media Platform. And i think in current time there no any other platform is available for campier to Facebook.

All my friends are on it. That's what really matters. Only possible way to move, is to move in mass. I don't see that happening unless an earth quake strikes FB server.

Which I pray will never happen. All my friends are on FB too. They just don't like the other social networkings as much as FB.
