    When using this company previously for a purchase of a web domain. When placing the order I ticked the box saying domain privacy and no sales communication. A week later my mobile did no stop ringing, do you want binary options this forex that commodities in gold, it was a right pain in the bum. Six months later I noticed that there was no domain privacy on and it had been turned off. On the sign up email I had it confirms that I had switched privacy on. Customer service is pretty easy but website builder was not very good.

    Please note this review is based on a service provided approximately 10 years ago. Search results suggest that my experiences at that time are no different from what a number of 1&1 customers are still experiencing and therefore I think this review still has validity

    I had a number of sites running on their servers for a few years but became unhappy with the level of support provided when problems such as outages occurred. Typically the blame would be placed on software such as vBulletin when it was clear that the entire server was off-line.

    I cancelled all services prior to renewal which I recall involved a multilevel process including a callback for confirmation which proved very hard to obtain. It appears they still operate a similar procedure. 1&1 ignored the cancellation and continued to take money via a direct debit which I immediately cancelled. This resulted in threats of legal action to my home address which I largely ignored and the ever increasing 'debt' which was sold on to a string of debt collection agencies.

    To be clear 1&1 took a payment for services after the renewal date in full knowledge that those services had long since been terminated i.e. they actually owe me money.

    Setting aside their support which I'd describe as dire, I found their actual server provision to be generally adequate with some room for improvement. Their business practices however I'd describe as a scam. If Google is to be believed, what happened to me has happened to many thousands of customers. It seems 1&1 are the Hotel California of server providers, 'You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave!'

    Have been using XXL VPS Cloud server (Windows) for a year now with no problems. (Vbulletin forum with a couple million page views per month and around 60k users per month)

    I run my own dns and mail servers, and my domains are registered with Dotster, so I can't comment on that end.
    All I know is that I'm saving quite a bit compared to my old Softlayer dedicated server. After 20 years of running bare metal servers, it's a little hard to wrap my head around this "cloud" stuff, but it seems to get the job done.
