Should you listen to members if they want a thread or post deleted? Wouldn't they be able to edit them afterwards if we don't listen to their request and change their post to "...". That would make it messy.

If they have a good reason: Yes you should listen.

It's all up to the software you are using, what permissions do they have.
Can't edit
Can edit for 1 hour/day etc.
Can edit infinitely.

That pretty much sums it up for me.

If there's a good reason then you should certainly consider the request. I would also set limits on post editing otherwise a disgruntled user could trash his or her entire post history. Anything from an hour to a day seems reasonable.

I agree with the other posters. The decision would be based on the reason for the request.
Editing rights should be restricted for most members. Only senior mods and admins should have full editing rights imho.

Yep, same here. It's all dependent on the reason for the deletion. If it's just the member throwing a fit because someone disagreed with them, then chances are I wouldn't remove it. I honestly can't even think of a valid reason for deleting posts at the moment but I'm sure there are some!

Always try to stick to your TOS when it comes to your posting and moderation. If there's a reason, most likely it matches what is listed as violation in your TOS which they agreed to upon registering.

I normally allow editing for a 8 hours after the initial post is made, if its requested to be deleted edited after that they can contact a moderator and providing its justifiable then thats fine.

On communities where its a little more adult i normally allow 1 week of being able to edit posts ( less chance of someone throwing a hissy fit and manually going back and edit/remove their posts out of spite ).

I also have a usergroup setup for those members who contribute alot that can edit posts , for example someone who isnt a moderator but maintains leaderboards or threads which require editing over a long period of time

I dont think there is a straight one situation fits all type answer, but you get the gist of it by the responses in this thread.

I didn't delete posts just because someone asked to. It was clearly stated in my TOS. If the posts didn't break any rules, they'd remain there. If the poster didn't want to be a part of our community, the posts could be marked as 'anonymous', but not deleted. It would mess up the entire forum.

No member was allowed to edit/delete. Mods could MOVE posts, I'd edit / delete them.\

All this because of some pretty nasty experiences a decade ago, when I was new to forum management, so I started getting more cautious afterwards.

What? You didn't even allow members to edit their own posts? Not even for a set time limit?

By the way, what happened to your forum? You had a lot of content listed on the site.

I don't really let members delete content but they have a little while to edit it at first, to correct mistakes or whatever.

Exactly! People make mistakes with spelling or forget to add something, so giving them some editing time is important. I do vaguely remember joining the forum Dojo ran and spotting I couldn't edit my posts right away after posted them. Don't know, all sounds a bit paranoid to me.. like you want too much full control over everything. Certainly not a way to run a forum not allowing at least some time to edit posts for correcting mistakes

I think there was a short-time editing option, if I am not mistaken. 15 minutes or something like this. afterwards only I could edit. Reason? I had a 'smart guy' edit his posts with n/a after wanting to leave the forums. Happened a long time ago, but it was a good lesson :D

Right now the forums are not active anymore, I had a baby and cannot spend as much time as before. Will probably put some of the old content back, since I still have the hosting accounts for my forums.

For my forum, I have also have an editing time of around 15 minutes. Users can't delete threads or posts, but can contact me if they want a deletion.

Then if I ever DO "delete" I still don't, instead I might just move the content to a area hidden from public view.
