From experience, the fewer rules a community has, the harder you have to be when enforcing them, as certain types of members will push the limits. Clear, concise rules are the order of the day.

A community which is specifically for people who identify as trolls is going to be a community where rules will be pushed to the limit and when they break them you had better be prepared to show no mercy to the member who breaks them, otherwise you are giving everyone else the green light to push the envelope.

That'd be too apocalyptic for my taste. I may not mind hardheaded people getting into fights with other hardheaded people, but uncapping the potential for escalation is a really bad idea that gets the SWAT involved for not even 15 minutes of lulz followed by tragedies.

A forum centered around educated criticism or spepticism would be a much better idea IMO. At least you get smart people behind an acceptable ideas and frustrating lineskirters looking for fights out of the picture.

Well it would be "virtually lawless". You would want to disallow porn. I have no problem with swearing though.

Where exactly is the appeal in a trolling forum that doesn't even allow one to post such timeless classics as goatse and tubgirl?

Myself, I like niche topic sites. I enjoy chatting with like minded folks as I am. That's why I like it here. I can chat and pick the brains of fellow admins. I never did like a free for all, everything goes type of community. They seem to get a little carried away at times.

i ran a site like that for a few years. there were pretty much no rules outside of irl legal concerns, and there was a couple subforums that were strictly sfw and troll-free. the biggest problem was that people loved having the freedom for themselves, but didnt like the same freedom extended to others. there were constant demands that somebody be moderated, accusations of favouritism when nobody was moderated, and it then became a game to see who could manage to get themselves 'wrongly' banned. there was even a lawsuit!
i learnt a lot by running that site, and although every site i have ever run since has had a 'trollish' element, i have been careful to avoid a repeat of that site. you need to foresee the inevitable dilemmas, plan accordingly, have a very clear structure, and take an absolute, no-exceptions-style of moderation.

Somebody I know made a forum specifically for people to troll with no rules. It lasted about 2 weeks before the owner deleted it :p

I recall someone on TAZ having a forum like that. I don't remember who though. The site had a goofy name and it ran on phpBB. I want to say it was called "The Smackdown 3000" but I'm likely wrong.

It doesn't sound as fun as a troll on a forum that isn't for trolling.

I think spam would be the biggest problem with such a forum. They would spam you so bad that your hosting provider wil shut you down.

If you mean adspam, then even most trolling forums have rules against that. No one likes spambots, not even other spambots.

If, however, you mean spam as in sheer volume of Stupid Pointless Off-topic Messages then just look at sites like Gaia and 4chan that pretty much thrive on the stuff. Hosts generally don't really care as long as the content is within their TOS and won't get anyone in trouble with the law.

There's a lot of troll's out there, it could work. But if you're planning on monetizing it, good luck because then you'd have to enforce rules on the forum and troll's do not like rules. However, whether you monetize it or not it could just end up being a spam forum because again, no rules, you can try to make some rules, but troll's will be troll's and its not really worth the trouble.

PS, sorry Russ. Meant to quote the first post. Didn't realize I was viewing the second page at the time.

I tried to run a trolling community, it lasted until I realised that the only people that were signing up were as mature as the niche.
