If you are smart, you won't and here is why: Aurora install source revealed, and 175 Megabytes of televisual terror

Maybe the reason why install sites are so thin on the ground is because there aren't any. Not a lot, anyway. It was obvious that Aurora was getting onboard somehow, but no-one seemed quite sure where from. When I think back now, to all those Hijack This logs posted on security forums...the answer was staring us in the face. Do a random Google search for Nail.exe and Aurora.exe, check out the forums and see what reoccurs, time and time again:

btdownloadgui.exe,

Otherwise known as Bittorrent. I checked hundreds of those damn logs, and more often than not, it was chugging away in the background. No wonder none of the victims (or spyware experts) seemed to know what site Aurora was coming from - there was no site. It would have never occured to the end-users that it could have crept in by another means altogether.

And you know what's coming now, don't you? That's right, a totally messed up desktop. Below, you can see no less than FIVE Internet Explorer windows forced open, 3 Ceres windows (sometimes Aurora is installed rather than Ceres), Slotch, Bullseye Network, 180 Search Assistant, SideFind, Search Miracle and YourSiteBar - all of these opened up within the space of around a minute or less. Also, a number of programs were found lurking in the Start Menu, including Powerscan (FIND YOUR PORN! HIDE IT! ITS THE WIFE!) , WhenU (I think!) and a number of other "valuable additions"

Paperghost is a member of ASAP just as I am. Here is a link to his website: Vitalsecurity. Liz

Southernlady, please explain in your own words what you mean? Are you saying that users of bittorrent will have spyware or browser hijacking software installed? Have the makers of bittorrent done something wrong?

The makers of bittorent have NOT done anything wrong. The problem is, bittorent has been exploited by others and you, the user of bittorrent don't know what YOU are downloading when you use it. Liz

Even *I* use it for that. But why use it for that when you can get fedora core 4 off of the mirror sites, right? Or have you discovered that the bittorrent is faster. The problem is, it's JUST so tempting to go elsewhere while in bittorent. Liz

:) I know what your saying. Unfortunately being in Russia my bandwidth costs a fortune so I don't run bittorrent here, I run it on one of my servers in the USA and let it deal with the torrent and then seed various linux distros. This gives me a warm feeling that I'm giving something back to the linux community and also means if my server where to even sniff an illegal file it would be shutdown by the datacentre, thus a detterant that makes me be a good boy :)
