Is social networking just a fad that will go away someday? I sometimes think it might become another type of burst bubble like the dotcom bubble of the 90s.

Unlike the internet tech bubble of the 1990s, where we didn't have the infrastructure (computers in every household), Social Networking is a very stable and profitable industry. I'm particularly excited about the commercial future of Social Networking. Customer interaction/support is definitely on the rise and social networks are at the forefront of it... http://mashable.com/2011/11/04/social-media-news-live-blog/

This. In certain aspects, perhaps it is a fad, but for the reason Jasper mentioned alone makes the monster that is social networking an amazing forethought.

The development of mobile phone Apps for FB and other social networking sites, along with 'Check-In' and photos, has made a big difference.

It's no longer a niche for students and people who spend their lives at connected computers - and that has massively extended the demographic.

A 72-year-old relative used his iPhone to check in to the coronary care unit for his bypass surgery, and his grandchildren wished him luck and congratulated him on his recovery.

That's quite a significant development.

Thanks for sharing the article Jasper....I think it wouldn't burst like 90s tech bubble...Social networking is becoming an integral part of internet and search engines are also paying a lot more attention to these networks..

I think that Social networking Sites are here to stay for a long time. Nowadays, many new social networking sites are being launched each day. I have come across a new social networking site whose name is corlif.com. This site gives it's members an option of voluntary online charity, along with social networking.

I think they will make a lasting impact and stick around. Considering they are one of the prime ways for many to advertise these days (look at how many forums are trying to get into social networking integration), I think its hard to say people will jump ship quickly with it. I think it'll thrive for quite some time. :)
