Looks like the text could use some smooth anti-aliasing. It has rough edges right now
There are signs of raster elements being used. Turn up the brightness and you can see the patches and remnants from cutting and pasting the logo.
Might as well some padding on the left

I agree with the previous reply - the monkey element looks like a bit of a .... cheap job and possibly graphic revision swiped from somewhere. The fonts are not very clean either. And I'm not sure what a monkey even has to do the 'black hat' niche... IDK ... I'm not much a fan and I question the originality

Yeah I don't get the whole ape thing. Chance of it being seen as something unintended as well, to most people. It's not a good mascot.

I don't like the monkey. Reminds me of mail chimp. Also, I agree with the quality of the graphics. I had very high quality graphics done for my site but the images were compressed for decent load time (and of course you lose quality). There is a tradeoff on that stuff. I still retain both compressed and non compressed versions.

Yeah all around lots of stuff not right here. I personally am quite picky about negative space, which due to the color of the hat adds quite a lot, the design overall is quite generic and lackluster, not much emphasis put on font choice which can often make or break a design. Another issue I have is simply the placement of the character, It's rather left leaning but due to the 'bright' colors of the font, it really takes away from it, I find myself reading a portion of the text, looking back at the mascot, then reading some more. It's a bit all over the place and many of the elements were overlooked. This is just in addition to the raster artifacts as pointed out above and upscaling/downscaling wasn't necessarily put into consideration with this design. To sum it up, cheap, generic, rather unoriginal (Not your website, the design), it has very little personality. My first thought or word of advice would be - take the loss and just commission a new one.

The black hat of the monkey doesn't contrast enough with the black background of the website, blends in too much. You could almost do with some kind of light stroke around it to make it stand out.
It's not high res either, looks fuzzy on my screen.
In terms of mascot, I'd have potentially gone instead for a leprechaun. That way you could have him with a pot of gold, and have the black hat on.
Plus leprechauns are renowned to be...slightly nefarious, mischevious? It would still fit in with your dodgy site subject material.
Or just forget the mascot and have just a logotype.

In fact - I created a leprechaun logo a few days ago. It wasn't the exact type of leprechaun the client was looking for - so he decided to go in a slightly different direction. I still have the design though and think it would serve better than the monkey design:

It's just a wee bit dodgy haha. Short cuts to SEO kinda.
In general terms: A "Black Hat" is someone who doesn't do things by the book online, people who hack/script etc. A "White Hat" is an ethical hacker paid to find vulnerabilities so that they can be patched to keep black hats out.

From my (limited) understanding, I believe black hat can be incredibly profitable, which is why many zero day software exploits never get reported, and instead get sold on the black market or to companies that specialise in security and are willing to fork out the big bucks for them

Now I understand. I thought we were only referring to black hats in SEO, which I'm not familiar with.
A black hat the way you described it is very profitable indeed. Interesting that a company like Norton would engage in this type of behavior.
