Just power it off and on again or if that doesn't work force a restart. If all else fails perform a factory reset.

Phones themselves don't just get slower with age, whether Android or iPhone.

I almost jumped on that before I read the next sentence :D The final update available to my iPhone 4 caused it to run like a dog on no legs but as you quite rightly said, it was the software that did for it :)

take care of your phone and don't install a metric crap ton of useless apps on it. Like my mother, only the goddess knows how often i have to reset her phones because of all the **** she installs on it.

Used a Galaxy S3 for 5 years, never an issue with it. Wasn't planning to replace (suited my needs) until it got smashed beyond repair 3 weeks ago falling out of my pocket onto its corner on concrete.

One thing that can slow any phone over time is constantly updating apps (why I don't set mine on auto update, and only update if it's a big bug fix or security update) and using the included memory drive near it's space limits instead of offloading as much as possible to an SD card. The SSD in phones, like any SSD, gets slower with more write cycles, and it's even worse when it's near capacity.

Hmm... I think this only happens in the android phones not supported by the software upgrade. Applications changed to adapt to the new OS version, it is possible that running old versions of the operating system may cause jitter, lag and crashes

Not really... All other things equal, a 5 year old Android is going to run Oreo much worse than any current gen phone.

Nowadays, there is much adware, bloatware to be come up with the application you install from unknown sources. Also, Increasing size of updated application: When devices release, it is compatible with the Android version installed on a device.

I have a sony tipo debuted in 2012, running android version 4.0.4, mono processor, cpu 800Mhz. Currently, only the basic tasks of a phone can be used; even google maps make the machine slow down. So I think, android depends a lot on the configuration and support from the manufacturer about the software update, if the software is updated to suit the configuration, I think it's pretty good too like the rom cyanogenmod is an example

In theory. Nowadays all recent smartphones handle the basics and beyond very well, unlike years ago when it was a gamble.
You paid a hefty premium and devices didnt last long without slowdowns and other issues (slow cpu, little RAM, low display resolution). No wonder people often pick older iPhones if Android failed them, those at least receive updates.

did you factory reset it. Could be apps running their background services causing the issue.

I've had the Samsung Galaxy S3 & S6 and now loving my LG G2. Never had an issue until I threw the S6 across the room because ofa TN Volunteers college football loss. It was smashed, literally drowned in cracks across the screen. Completely unusable and only a week old ARG!!! User error (read: IGNORANCE LOL) as it were... Other than that = pretty smooth sailing.

Like others have said though, if your android is slowing or crashing - it probably has to do with some kinda crapware install.
