What's the worst thing you've ever seen a moderator/admin do?

Why, I never! I take a fence to you even thinking that. *grabs hammer and nails*
But where are you going to take it?

bad... stay on topic.. bad Lisa!

Hmmmm... worst things. A forum I joined many moons ago - the admin banned anyone who didn't make a intro post within 24 hours of registering. That was quite interesting really, as he manually approved all registrations and quite a few were left over 24 hours. Poor guys didn't even get the chance to say hello, they were just banned. I'm still not entirely sure the admin knew that no one could post until he'd manually approved them...

I'm going to see a man about a jog.

On the topic of this topic, here's something I saw very recently: I saw an admin take a thread off topic. Now how are the normal members supposed to keep to it if they cannot?! #setanexample

fake edit: #goodsave

So, what's the most outrageous thing you've seen a mod/admin do? :russ:
Either minimize or flat out ignore the growing importance of mobile/responsive scripts.

Edit: let me lengthen this response. We mobile users are known for short, non-contributing responses.

I need to break that mold.

And stuff.

And things.

SJW as forums admins!!

If you disagree with my opinion, and give me a logical argument of which I cannot beat with fact or fake news then I will ban you!!

One of the worst things I can recall in recent memory, which took place on another site (not my own), was a staff member on a dev support site, took it upon themselves to edit the post of unsuspecting members out of context. Particularly anytime a select few made a valid point on any particular subject which was either disliked or disagreed with by the staff, the staff member would edit their post and once done their unsuspecting victims would 'look like' a raving lunatic. On occasion, the staff member would even log into other people's accounts and post as their unsuspecting user.

What was worse is more often than not, their victims would be none the wiser as the staff member would start off with their older post first, establishing a history over time, and it would be much later before the staff member would target more recent post. These poor souls remained none the wiser as they would not receive any notice of these edits or if anyone replied to those particular post, leaving them completely unaware. Once the unsuspecting victim realized what was happening they would have all their content moderated (post, profile, messages, etc..) so they could not make a public appeal.

Ouch! That wins this competition by a mile

I know an admin who once transferred the site to a new server, and forgot to check the attachments, and lost them all

A consumer site mod andyorch who was so up his own backside that he would delete or edit any post
that didn't agree with his very left-wing political view and would seriously throw his toys out of the pram
when challenged about it.

Oh, forgot this old gem:

An old site I used thought it would be funny to promote every single member on the site to moderator/admin for a day, then watched the results basically burn the forum to the ground. Instead of reverting to a backup, they then apparently just wiped the database and started over.

I remember one site they just closed topics if nobody had replied after 7 days. it was the MOST ANNOYING thing in the history of anything..

OR they closed topics after the question had been answered, and then you know what someone would ask the same question again and they would close it and say "please use the search function, already answered" but not even link to the frickn answer..

over over modded..

Some years ago (I still was a mod at the time) one of our moderators revelead in private to some user about a surprise contest which we would have to launch within a few weeks, with business partners and a great planned presentation. The news spread quickly on the web, and the admin did not do it very well :D

What strange forums you all post on. The craziest postings I've ever seen on forums were people who would get blind drunk, presumably, and post utter crap.

Same, talk about a hangover the next day! :wtf_pigeon:

At a real world meet, I overheard a guy waxing lyrically about how he was the owner and would be doing x and y. I stayed quiet, never know might be a good idea emerging, but no, horror! :ninja: Soon after said member applied to be a moderator, was rejected and went critical, so exited, quietly and perhaps not by full due process.

I once and only once publically reversed a senior mod's call. It was a gut call, late and I really didn't think it through. Turns out it was a big call and wrong on my behalf. Lost a bloody good team member over that act before thinking it all through. Now, I take too long, and tend to swallow the team's judgement over my own.

Also changed all the avatars once to a whackyracer; automotive forum, unless, it was you viewing your own avatar, then it was yours. Much confusion for one morning of the year. Only bad as it took days to explain why it happened. T he fun, yes, that wore off quickly.

Had a mod who we discovered editing members posts to insult them, for fun. When we demoted him he became intent on creating strife and drama all over the forum, then when I finally had to lay down the ban-hammer he edited PM's from me and spread out-of-context quotes to a bunch of members trying to make me look like a tyrant.

It was nice to see he was largely met with skepticism as most of our member base know we aren't like that, though we were still getting called tyrants by a few.

A mod once gave me his password so I could log into his account and see what sort of fun things mods could do
