Wait for XF2?

Go with XF 1.5 now. XF2 will probably take a good 9-12 months for all XF addon developers to get their addons caught up and bug free for XF2 anyway.

Go for the software available now.

Even when XF2 is released, it will likely a while before its use is recommended, between important addons yet to be redevelopped for it and the usual quickfix releases that adress issues that havent been caught during beta.

I think that's wishful thinking.
I agree, the last I looked there were 86 bug reports unresolved and we are at release 8 of the Dev preview. Given the length of time to get where it is now and we still have beta and RC's to go through I'm not expecting any viable release this year. It takes time to get through all this and people just have to be patient.

Sorry, did not know giving you the answer deserved a meh rating, it's not my fault it takes time to code things properly and securely. ;)
I figured you to be one who understood that a "meh" rating isn't always about the person who posted, but about the information you provided. I too am less than enthusiastic about the fact it will take so long to release v.2. It doesn't have anything to do with you, though. If we were sitting around a table together, talking about this and you told me your experience indicates it will be some time before the product is released, I might utter something resembling a "meh" about it. Would you take offense? You shouldn't.

I would argue it depends on what kind of forum you are trying to build. If the current XF 1.5 meets your needs, then why wait?

If there's something in XF2.0 that is critical for your forum's success, wait for XF 2.0.

Yes, I did misread that. 9-12 months after XF2 stable seems much more feasible. Still its very unlikely all addons will be upgraded. Some developers have a massive portfolio, others may not work with xf2 at all and others may wait and see if xf2.1 will have the features that their addon offers. I think that after it becomes clear which addons did not make it, a new wave of development is likely to fill the gaps.

From my experience going through vB 1.x to 4.x upgrades, with each major release it's a good time to do some auditing and clean up of plugins to see what you can do 'without'. Otherwise, hanging onto must have plugins/addons, just massively delays the core forum upgrade cycle.

Yes, but there are always some plugins that are not available on the new version and need to be custom developed after the smoke clears.

Who can afford to wait for XF2 with no known ETA and who knows how long before most addons are ported over?

XF is severely understaffed, the current product and official addons have seen hardly any development in the last 2-3+ YEARS and the situation won't get any better unless they hire more people. If anything, I'd be evaluating options other than XF alongside it for starting a new community.

I have a number of quite large databases (mainly vB based) from old gaming forums I'm thinking of merging and opening up on XF2. I originally considered using the current version of XenForo but thought it better of it as I think it's better to open up a new shop after the refurb. I'm hoping for the purposes of this particular project XenForo 2 will contain at least some of the functionality I require but...

As time passes I'm leaning more and more towards IPS 4.2 which I think leaves XF2 in the dust. At this moment in time I think IPS have a far better grasp of what a modern forum platform needs to be.

Check out Woltlab too, Zappa. You get their demo for two weeks to have a play with and if you like it, you can keep getting demos to trial it for as long as you want. Beware, though, unlike IPS, there is no manual....

It's definitely on my list but thanks for the reminder :)

As someone who has talked strategy with Kier and Mike, I trust him completely. If they are doing a complete overhaul and rewrite, there has to be a reason why.

During a short visit in Los Angeles, I met up with Kier and Mike and they shared their vision and goals for the 1.x series and what was to come. I walked away - completely blown away because they were thinking about us the community, our needs, and features we didn't even know we needed yet.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't have anything against the rewrite, I'm all for it. I'm just saying that the current main product and official addons have suffered lack of development spanning several years due to complete focus on XF2. If they waived the official addon renewal fees during this time, at least, I'd say fine, they haven't done anything much with the RM, ES and other addons in 2, 3 etc. years but at least the charges for renewing these addons aren't stacking up with the yearly renewal fees. But that wasn't the case.

As it is, it feels like a repeat of the blogs addon on vB basically. Get people to buy it and switch over to using it, killing the unofficial competition in the process, then stop developing it. I realize that they may not have been their intention, but it is the effective end result. And with no new developers coming on board, it won't be any different for probably another 2 years. They've bitten off way too much for such a small crew to handle in anything resembling a timely manner.

This is actually the dilemma I currently face. There are only a couple add-ons I want somewhat immediately and both of which are being developed right now for 2.0. The biggest problem I have is not knowing when the beta will be out. Once the beta is out it can be updated without wiping the database every time. If I go 1.5 I'd buy a theme and who knows when or if that theme would be available for 2.0. Plus if go 1.5 now and buy add-ons then I may have to re-buy them again for 2.0 since devs have to re-write them. 2.0 beta can't be too far off now. If they were to tell me beta will be some time in September or later I'd go 1.5. If they tell me a few weeks I'd hold out. Unfortunately they only leave clues as to what they're thinking and there's no hard deadlines so anything can happen. Chris has said that their main site will be updated to 2.0 beta before the beta is released and that has yet to happen. He also estimated that once that does happen it could be a week or longer before the beta is released to the public, depending on the problems they face. It's all just a guessing game which is making this a difficult decision.
