Do they want to stimulate webmasters to leave vb3/4 in favour of vb5 or will that turn out unrelated?

If I've read the situation correctly Internet Brands probably didn't intend to do any more than demote one admin. It's the consequences of that they now need to deal with or more likely ignore while vb.org slowly slips into oblivion.

If they have lost most of the staff now on vB.org. Hmm... they may start asking people on vB.com, such as Mark.B to staff that forum as well. Guess it depends how much they care that vB.org stays around?

I get the sense vb.org isn't important to whatever their goals are. If anything, shutting it down would probably result in another wave of people flocking to alternatives whether that's 5.x cloud, XenForo, or something else.

What annoyed me most though was that they tried to pretend I'd agreed to it ! utter nonsense of course.

They're incredibly dumb if they thought that you of all people would let them get away with that.

I havent looked in awhile-- but aren't the sites on the cloud not able to install addons? Hence vb.org is useless for that?

That is correct.

Then again, after 5 years, there are only 74 mods for vB5 anyway, and some of those 74 are probably no longer functional.

Yes, and one of them even has an install count greater than 100 - in fact 187 (then again, its 5 years old now).

Impressive eh :)

So vB.org doesn't have the same importance like it did in the old days for vBulletin 2 and 3, even 4. They might see this as an opportunity to close vB.org down.

Too bad the software and the modder ecosystem are on the ropes after v5, otherwise it would be worth investigating creating a 'new vb.org', free from IB and its henchmen. Maybe even a software-agnostic community that covers addons from all forum software, not just vB.
Such as TAZ?
The BDC* disappeared, would be worth to investigate the possibilities.
Maybe it isn't worth?

I've been asked by several people privately if TAZ will become the "new vB.org".

I would never attempt to turn TAZ into a replacement for vB.org. vB.org was a very special place for a lot of people for a very long time. In recent years it's been only a shadow of its former self, but thanks to its remaining members and diehard staff it managed to press on. I can only speculate as to what will become of it moving forward. The magic of vB.org was in its synergy - the total package was much more than just the sum of its many fine parts.

There is no intention on our part to actively change anything as a result of the changes at vB.org. That said, there is certainly room on TAZ for more vBulletin discussions in our forums, more vBulletin add-ons in our Resource Manager, and more vBulletin experts as active TAZ members or staff. It will be up to the individual people involved to make the change if they wish. If it comes to pass that TAZ does pick up some of the slack from the decline of vB.org I think we're up for it. :)

Well said. So, please, start by adding a top category "vBulletin" at Resource Manager with subcategories Applications, AddOns and Styles, or whatever you think better. And a thread prefix selector for "Ver.3x, Ver.4x, Ver.5x".

Thank you
Will do! I'm working today so it might take a while for me to do it myself unless one of my minions is around. :)

Pfft, how could TAZ even compete with vB.org's whopping 75 vB5 modifications?

It's not vB.org that caused its downfall, it's vBulletin itself and what it's become. vB.org was only ever going to be as good as the software it was supporting allowed it to be - and once vB started to fall, vB.org was bound to fall with it.

What I think people really want is just continued support and mods for the 3.x and 4.x series. It's not that they want "vB.org" itself, but that they want a place where they can still have support and mods for the old versions of the vB software that they either still use or have fond memories of.

I have yet to decide what to do with all my old mods.

One option is to convert one of my old test sites into a live forum to host them.

Sounds like a plan to me!
