Using Contests and Giveaways to Increase Forum Traffic

Update 2019.
There are so many professional giveaway junkies who are stay at home parents (mostly moms), that doing giveaways doesn't really do anything other than generate publicity (may not even be the right kind of publicity!) & increase my bounce rate. I've fallen back to doing giveaways one every three months.
Since back to school is here (USA), I may do a "$25 Amazon Back to School Budget Boost."
The issue is - I require a forum sign up, an intro, & 1 post in the forum to enter the giveaway & that seems to be too much of an effort for the giveaway junkies - which won't become part of the community anyway....
