What happens if you get a lite theme, and remove footer of the theme?

Will you get suspended? Do you need to keep copyright on there by law?

It's normally considered a breach of the licencing terms, depending on the licence type.
Some licencing types allow you to modify software etc. There is usually an attribution clause in most licences however.

As to what can happen, that will depend on the author of the theme and wether they want to pursue it, and also on the hosting service.

That is something you need to ask the theme developer.

If the theme/plugin is obtained under a GPL license then you are free to change it in anyway that you wish and that includes removing any copyright notices and/or theme/plugin developer back-links. That applies to all WordPress themes whether they are paid for or free to use.

What zappaDPJ said.

Most themes on WP.org are generally released under the GPL license. There will be stipulations that the theme author would *prefer* you to keep the copyright intact as a show of support. But it's not required unless the license requires it. Most premium themes, however, will require to you to keep the copyright and/or purchase a branding free option.
