Depends on the niche that they are in but most would sell nick nacks, others would sell stuff that is being discussed on their site.

You mean the site selling things like decals, hats, keychains?

Yes, and stuff that belongs to the niche it self if you have a train forum, model trains etc. Cars materials for a car.

The Resource manager should be able to do a lot off this stuff it only needs expanding.

I'd like to see better integration with the ad platforms. In other words, if a user wants to sponsor the site for a month, he can upgrade to a "sponsor" and upload a banner, and when that ad expires, he drops out of the "site sponsors" group.

Yeah, that would be a nice feature

Xenforo 1 to Xenforo 2 = 5 years.
I hope Xenforo 3 doesnt take 5 years.

(2)
Move beyond forums.

Well, to be fair, 5 years included building it from scratch and a lawsuit they had to work though

They did build XenForo 1 from scratch according to form in just a year. Just saying... before I get my head bitten off for saying that.

Ahh.. but "they" weren't having to support an existing platform with upgrades/bug fixes when they did that now were they? ;)
but now they have mods that as fair I know deal with support (at least at the 1st level) and a "new" dev ;)

Xenforo so far has been a very solid software with all/most of the features found in similar forum software suites.

But, it seems forums in general are in decline (as has been discussed in other threads here), so now Xenforo needs something really innovative and new. (As do all the other big forum suites, obviously.) This is what I'm hoping for with the XF2.x series, but I fear my hopes will be squashed. We've been told XF2.0 will be a rewrite that has feature parity with XF1.x. so I don't expect to see anything revolutionary there, but I have some hopes for the later 2.x releases.

That said, perhaps it's wizer to let smaller, newer forum softwares do most of the feature innovation and then borrow good, proven ideas from them. Which makes it important to have a rock solid yet flexible platform to build on, which I presume is a goal for XF2.

I predict that XF2 focus will be on making the core code more efficient. For example the JS and CSS from the core and addons needs to be combined and relocated to the end of the body wherever possible. I bet there are countless examples of coding which was a compromise in 2009 in order to get XF out ASAP. I bet the team have been hating that code and feeling desperate to revamp it for years.
I think the options available to addons will be much better meaning that it will be easier to access more functions of the core and therefore will be easier to code.
I think there will be some nice, modern additions to the UI. I hope that there are some revolutionary elements to the evolution of XF.
But I don't think there will be many significant new features like a CMS.
I think sites like ours will take a long time to upgrade to XF2 because we will be waiting on addon developers to update. I hope the team go the extra mile to support developers.
Speaking of which, I'm much more cautious about installing addons these days because I don't want to be left high and dry when a developer loses interest. That's why I prefer to pay for addons - because the developer is then obligated.
We have 90 addons.
XF2 needs to be special to mitigate the social networking platforms which are stealing forum traffic. If people think all forums look and feel like vBulletin then they will think all forums are old fashioned. That's why XF2 needs to be modern and as many forums need to migrate to it as possible.
Interestingly our advertising team have reported from recent meetings with potential advertisers that they are recognising that forums have a better depth of discussion and so are keen to engage with forum communities.

Any of them removed because of discontinuation of support could cause a flood of complaints from a few members.
Not only that, but we have advertisers pay to use some of the features that come with addons.
If one of those breaks with a XF upgrade, we would lose money and credibility if we lose that functionality. We'd have to defer upgrading the core software until we paid someone to rewrite the addon. Inconvenient and costly.

Read a few mention that side of things with XF2. Just don't see what they can do to stop that, and not just them but any forum software out there. You simply cannot compete with a forum your hosting against the might of Facebook and Twitter no matter how good the software it.

Forums must unite and fight the FB behemoth together! Collaboration is the way to go! Forum networks is the future! ("Forum networks" not necessarily in the conventional meaning of the term. Something more integrated is what I'm thinking of.)

I want the vBulletin double click to edit thread topic feature back. Asked about it and they just said some about "it's not intuitive".
