Is it true that they lost a third of their traffic after the change? lol

That's an awfully steep price to pay to keep Apple happy.

The issue was never the normal adult content it was about finding child porn on Tumblr that was not noticed by the filters.
We don't ban cars because car crashes happen, why punish the many for the crimes of the few?

People got fed a typical "think of the children" bull**** excuse that said it was about combating illegal content; but if you look at it from a finance perspective, Oath is just doing what Internet Brands does...buy a site with content that users made, monetize that content with a bunch of ads, and it will probably run it into the ground until it stops making money and then close/sell it. You can't get on most ad networks if you have porn, so the porn had to go. It's about dollars.

Because banning porn was easier then setting up filters and also cheaper. Think of the people that need to check the files manually that are not picked up by the filter.

You still need a filter to block porn... And you still need all those people to pick things up manually which aren't blocked by the filter.

In fact, trying to purge all porn is probably harder than trying to purge one specific type which pretty much everyone knows is illegal and will get them in prison, if they're caught.

No purging everything is easier then specific the training of the system is much faster because you do not have to single out or include. So by saying no porn is faster also because you do this no discussion if it may be posted or not.

It makes a lot more sense when you think about it from the perspective of a webmaster wanting to run more advertisements.

Verizon/Oath doesn't care about how Tumblr was the best site on the internet for lovingly-curated, female-friendly porn, or the big place where artists could post their NSFW artworks, etc. Verizon/Oath bought Tumblr as an investment. In order to get a return on that investment they've got to monetize it somehow.

You can't put Google Ads and other major ad networks on a porn site. If porn interferes with monetization, then the solution is to get rid of the porn.

I'm this case Tumblr's "solution" has proven to be its detriment. I read they're looking to sell. Read a piece a couple days ago that said PornHub was interested in biting (erm) I mean buying and returnING Tumblr to its former glory. I mean... If you didn't see in advance that barring porn from Tumblr would dropkick the traffic stats into some sort of lethargic complacency better and more widely known as the grinding halt - then you probably should not be in the online marketing business.

Major fail banning porn from tumbler. It was just not a very well thoughtout idea. Either that or the owners simply no longer care.

Isn't that literally the whole reason people use Tumblr at all? What's the point of it's existence otherwise?

Dreamwidth is accepting the tumblr users. But dreamwidth being a livejournal clone. I don't think it'd be perfect fit. I think there needs to be other alternatives that one needs.
