Taking things one step further, perhaps the time has come for forum developers to build their products primarily for mobile viewing with the desktop left as an afterthought. That after all was the thinking in reverse while the desktop reigned supreme. What a horrible thought!:p
I've been trying and trying to get mobile versions sorted, or an App for XF for so long it's not true. There's nothing out there and the main issue for me at least, is we're so heavily customised and having spent almost £20k in total over 3 years means that to look for a new foundation software (as I didn't use it OOTB) would be costly in money, time, customisation and so forth. Hence why I am looking at IPS or staying and moving up to XF2, but we need something for mobile and need it yesterday. I've posted some stats about this previously somewhere, but our traffic is 85%+ mobile. And most of our users initially moan about how complicated it is on mobile. Yes, it is, but they need acclimatisation also.
But yes, this is something urgent we need.
I'm no dinosaur and have iPads, iPhones, laptops, etc etc. But am a solid desktop user like yourself. Man, I love my rig and to lose it means I'd be lost, without a limb.. but we have to look forward and I'm stuffed if I know how to.
I've started playing with React Native to see if I can make something but it's going to be easier said than done.

Something I do firmly beleive is that the days of the big box computer are numbered. I'm conviced that in less than 10 years a smart phone/device will be the only device anyone will need. However for that to happen they will have to be able to easily interface with periferal devices i.e. keyboard, mouse and screen.
I imagine the device will be eliminated all-together, or at least made much less cumbersome than it is already. If I knew how I’d be the next Apple.

Figuring out how to parse BBCodes is going to be a night mare. Trust me on that one!
It would be tough to follow the independent design guidelines for iOS and Android and combining it into a single React Native codebase. I don't think Android users like iOS design style and vice versa.

The problem with getting the mobile experience right for forums is that it means getting the entire mobile experience polished.

That doesn't just mean having a responsive site that loads fine in safari.

It means having a product that enables all the Mobile OS levels features to complete the UI and UX, which is currently only available using a native app.

I know XF seem to have written off any kind of app at this point, or so it seems. I just hope progressive web apps start progressing a lot quicker so that we can get this same level of functionality through the web. It just concerns me that this will take quite a long time still.

Obviously this is hyperbole. Try writing a research paper on a smart phone, doing 3d animation on a phone, programming on a phone etc etc

What do I know, but I have a feeling most forum devs will be too slow to change. I think the writing is on the wall for forums. I'd love to see demographics of those who use forums. I am willing to bet the 18 and under generation are not flocking to them.

So you don't believe that in ten years time your smart phone will be more powerful than today's desktop computer?

hmmm maybe, personally I need a big screen 21in+ for most non casual things. How will that be accommodated?

Current technology would require you plug it into the HDMI port of a monitor but it's unlikely phone manufacturers would adopt that because it's large and antiquated so new kind of universal port would be required and blue tooth or something similar for other essentials such as a keyboard and mouse etc.

It really makes more sense to have one mobile device for all your computing requirements.

Nice distribution of mobile vs desktop. For me it's heavily skewed for desktop :)
