MarkFL submitted a new resource:

Force Users To Attach Images Inline - Allows the designation of specific users required to post all attached images inline.

Overview:

This product is designed to allow you to make certain the specified users attach their images inline. This works for users making new posts, and when editing existing posts.

The settings are as follows:

Enable Product?: This setting allows you to turn the product on/off.

Image File Extensions: This setting allows you to select from your image attachment types for those you wish to be attached inline by the specified users. If you add any...

i like some of the idea behind this, but looking for a more elegant solution....

ideally something like this, but working and better developed
https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=260447

or perhaps a combination of this and that one....ie something to make using inline easier, forcing inline use, then cleaning up the double posted content...

really all im after personally tho, is simply something to hide attachments if they are used inline......so they are not double displayed....some members i do not think would like being forced to insert inline....esp if it isnt easy/intuitive....but if they do not, having one or more attachments in the box at the end of the post is not really an issue......

its mainly when ppl DO insert them inline....it makes a bad flow by double posting them again imho

And Set:

  • View Attached Images Inline: "Yes, full size"
  • Thumbnail Creation: "No"...pay attention to the given instructions if you change this setting.

Experiment with the settings...personally, I find thumbnailed images to be useless and don't allow them. I've never had an issue with images being double displayed, they either show up in the attachments box if the user does not attach them inline, or they show up in the post if they are attached inline. This product makes it impossible for users to not attach them inline.

i can assure you by default....for example, if an attachment is uploaded via attachment manager in adv editor then linked inline, it will display in both places...

they fixed this in vb5 but not vb4....which is exactly the fix im after..

disabling thumbs and using this product could help if you started a site off that way, and did not want to use thumbs at all... but after having hundreds of thousands of old images which are using thumbs its not even possible to consider :(

it still seems like a huge limitation to ban inline thumbs fully and globally tho.....perhaps as a personal preference for some site types it could be a great shortcut, but inline thumbs can be much better to alternate in at times, for alot of sites... particularly image heavy using ones, imho....

if it has nothing to do with this, i guess feel free to ignore me....but i really think this is a big clunky problem of vb4...........you hate thumbs ok, fair enough, but what if you had to look at duplicates of the same ones lol that will be even worse right?....thats most vb4 ppl and pretty sure nobody wants that.....

I have seen vB 4.2.x sites that allow thumbnailed images (that you then have to click if you want to actually view them), and there was no double display of images issue. I've never personally experienced that issue, so I don't know which of your settings is allowing it, unfortunately.

I recently had an issue with a stubborn, lazy user who refused to post his images inline. This product is the result of my writing code to make it impossible for him not to get with the program. The reason I had an issue with it, is because when you are replying to help someone with a math problem, and that user refuses to use LaTeX, and chooses instead to go to the added effort to post images of his work rather than simply do as asked and use LaTeX, it is important to be able to see that image in the topic review. They show up there if the image is posted inline, but do not show up if they are not.

I wanted to share my solution here, but it does not address other issues with attachment settings. Those need to be addressed using the default vB settings.

i see....it is a complicated mess a bit....that is sure....and not highest priority atm for the project im trying to implement it on....

just for the record or whatever tho, the difference is compounded even farther because thumbs can be attached inline by use of the "image upload" icon in the editor (which does not double post if done that way)....and then also by the "attachment manager" whereby they can be linked inline using the url full sized, thumbs, whatever but in that case they will double show in the attachment box below post.....

that bbcode mod i linked(re-usable code) seems to have gotten very close to this functionality...i got so excited to see it at first...but it was reported that it only applied properly to the last post on a page which was edited.....plus who knows what other problematics could lurk inside sigh....i dont like the idea of needing to use bbcode anyway, should be automatic....perhaps one future day

thanks anyway
