Hi,

We are sending you this email to notify you about changes to your free Pingdom account. In an effort to deliver the best products and support for our customers that subscribe to our paid plans, we will no longer provide your existing free plan after January 28, 2016.

If you need simple uptime monitoring and alerting, we have a modified free plan available that may meet your needs. We encourage you to compare our entry level plans and decide which plan is best for you as described below. Early action on your part to this one-time offer will result in substantial savings for you over our normal rates.

Just got this email.

New Free Plan - Our new free plan is targeted towards users that need very simple uptime monitoring and alerting. While it is not as feature rich as your current free plan, it may have the features that are most important to you.
  • If you want to migrate your existing free account to the new free plan, you don’t need to do anything. We will migrate you to our new free plan on or around January 28, 2016.

As some point, most popular free things start charging, they have to pay the bills somehow.

Pingdom even had a free plan? When I tried to use it I just got a really laggy page that annoyed me (too much js maybe?) and it was buggy as far as CSS/clicking stuff went. I also kept getting prompted to upgrade. 1 site, 1 monitoring device thingy.

Also got the email, but not using it.

I'm using hyperspin.com for almost 8 years now. It's very good not cheap, but Pingdom wasn't cheap ether when I compared them.
Hyperspin has 34 worldwide monitoring stations.
I'm happy with them. :)

This has "bait and switch" all over it.
Thankfully there's no shortage of providers for the same services. One service's failure is another's opportunity.

More likely, everyone was using the free service and not enough subscribing to the paid service.
So they reduce what you get on the free service in the hopes people will start paying up.

And for most that not going to happen :)

I am using http://www.monitor.us/

They have a free service. Just throwing it out there so you might compare it to the new Pingdom free account.
I just installed this on my Linux server for CPU/Memory monitoring and added some uptime monitoring for HTTPS websites. Super easy. I'm surprised it's free, and it looks like their business plan is great too.

Pingdom has been around for quite a few years so Its not the bait and switch but I do think that they want more people to use their paid offers so they want to limit what they offer for free. Its sad but most of the time I got false-positives using the service so I have not used it for quite a few years now.
